During my DONA birth doula training, I was introduced to a very intimidating birth tool called a rebozo. A rebozo is a long flat garment used by women mostly in South America. The name comes from Spanish, from the verb that means to cover or envelop oneself. It can be worn in various ways, usually folded or wrapped around the head and/or upper body to shade from the sun, provide warmth and as an accessory to an outfit. It is also used to carry babies and large bundles, especially among indigenous women. Rebozos are also used during the birth experience. They can be used to help relax, comfort and support the birthing woman all while enhancing the connection between her and her partner. I described this beautiful piece of art as intimidating because I never truly felt comfortable using it until I took Gena Kirby's Rebozo Certification Class. She made the rebozo a tool to be revered and respected but also very simple and practical to use. I loved what I had learned so much that I wanted to teach other birth workers and expecting families how to harness the usefulness of the rebozo so I became one of the first Gena Kirby Method Rebozo Instructors in the spring of 2014.
